The story of Eval Island is this: You are Rick Masen, professional boat driver, unprofessional explorer(You've had a few run-ins with the CIA before). You get caught in a tropical monsoon while heading out to South America for some, ahem, adult entertainment. You crash-land on a moody, mysterious island(Eval Island). You search around a bit to find that a few dead people live here- a few hundred dead people. You also run into this old, wrinkly, hooded sage-like man with piercing silver eyes, who tells you that you shall soon join them, gesturing towards a group of twisted, horrifying figures twisted into yoga-gone-mad positions, who howl and mourn in their immortal pain. Soon after, you run into a thin, kind local who gives you a room in his hut, and tells you about the ghosts: A demented, brilliant yet insane criminal was locked up here years ago and was soon forgotten about when rumors that he had drowned himself became taken as reality. Tourists were let back into the island-and were never seen again. The reason that no one suspected anything was because the tourists couldn't bring any electronics or any way to contact civilization, so it wasn't a problem when they couldn't reply.
What you'll do in the game is survive the attacks from ghosts who are not quite pleased with you interrupting their mourning(maybe they too went insane),by having ghosts on your side do the fighting, or basically do something reminiscent of Clock Tower 3- RUN LIKE HELL! Since you have no actual weapons, aside from the aforementioned ghosts, you will panic a lot when mace-wielding spirits start swinging their weapons. Later in the game, you will find a boat(an old one at that), setting off a new side quest involving finding things around the island and turning them into gadgets a la Dark Cloud 2, and still later, a sweat-inducing boat chase- with you being the chased. But by who? I could say, but it would ruin too much.So see how long you can go throughout the game without wetting yourself-Think of it as an endurance test- for your shorts.
-- UPDATES!!!--
Sorry about the whole, 'You'll have to play the game to find out stuff' crap. I'm new to this, anyway. Anyways, let me explain a few more things:
First of all, the big thing about the fighting ghosts- You make & set traps to capture them.Example: Snap some reeds off, carve some stones or find some arrowheads, then use thin bark to tie it all together and VOILA! A make-shift bear trap! Unfortunately, once a ghost is captured (which sometimes can be avoided), they may put up a struggle. Let your already 'owned' ghosts talk to it, or beat it down so you can appear out of no-where and 'save the day' by healing the ghost, leaving it in your eternal debt. Some traps work better on specific ghosts, as you'll soon find out. Remember how I said that some ghosts put up a struggle? Well, if it does break free from the trap, it'll be mighty pissed off. It'll go all Wolverine, getting on all fours and sniffing bushes, smelling for flesh-new flesh.
Next on my list of 'To Improve' is the storyline: Still Rick Masen(Unless you can think of a better name), still in trouble with the law, but now you're serving community hours, in the shipping business. Of course, you're not just carrying tropic fruits and souveniers- you're also carrying guns. Tommy guns, rifles, machine guns, etc.,etc., leaving you with the option of just two guns to take with when you reach that oh so special place, Eval Island. The various goods will help gather info from the locals(Don't worry; this isn't Shenmue II now, and it'll stay that way.).
Finally is that one BIG twist in the plot- It's not just that one crazy man that's murdering. Something else is out there... And with the few locals dead, you won't get anything out of them. But what they left behind, that's the juicy stuff. Mostly it's major boring shit, but if look far enough, there are pictures-Wierd pictures. Pictures that won't make much sense- until one clue comes in. It happens on the monsoon season. A cruise ship has crashed onto the island. All but three passengers are dead. They simply rock in the corner, clutching themselves with wide eyes and trembling hands. You finally get one (or more, betting on how negotiable you are) to speak-but all he can do is hand a photograph and whisper,"Look."The players never see the actual photograph, but from the look on Rick's face, they don't want to see it. In fact, you never actually see who did it- taking advantage of the imagination and dreaming up something more horrible than the creators can make. It goes that way throughout the rest of the game, right down to the boat chase: You never actually see it, but you can hear it alright. Various sound effects will play, all menacing, all threatening-or you could do the most unlikely thing: Play the entire scene silent. All the way through, it should be frightening. One last note: Could you please leave ME some notes? If so, THANK YOU!!!Until then, Hasta la vista!
