Learn Game Programming
DeVry's Game and Simulation Programming curriculum will prepare you for taking on various development roles in the game industry.
Game Art & Design Degree
Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
This new Final Fantasy I had originally called FFXII, but since they already have that in production, I guess you could call it FFXIV or FFXV but no matter. This game is a work in progress, constantly changing, but I thought that now might be a good time to post what I have. First I’ll explain the characters: Characters all have an esper/summon residing in them that will eventually give them kick but abilities that will get better as your esper gets stronger. Also I hope to mix in some of the best elements from former FF games such as Limit Break from 7, Jobs from 4, Abilities from 9, and so on. Jobs will be interchangeable at any point at Employment Centers. Each character has his/her own unique set of jobs that they will get paid for depending on certain criteria. At certain levels, or when you achieve a goal you will be able to get new job classes, and each job class has different abilities which you can equip using ability points. Also, what weapons you can use depend on your job. When you don’t have a job you are able to talk to random people on the streets and perform Odd Jobs. The odd job system is simple. When talking to a person you can press square to ask them if they need an odd job performed. These can range from simple ‘find the cat’ sort of thing to ‘deliver this letter to my brother in the next town.’ But you still get money for performing odd jobs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cibi (is or Chibi): Cibi the main character of the game along with two others. Cibi is guy, and like many past final fantasy characters, he has a much shrouded past. Cibi has the power of Carbuncle inside of him and, consequently, has a small ruby horn growing out of his forehead (his main weapon), though he keeps a low profile by wearing a “green beret”. He’s small like Carbuncle and shy. His jobs include Burglar, Magician, Clown, Hunter, Mystic, Defender, Painter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iagan: (I’m telling you now that I will accept ANY Feedback for better names) Iagan is the oafish 7-foot tall powerhouse. With that I’ll bet you can guess his summon spirit, that’s right, its good old Ifrit. This is reflected in his fiery attitude. One of his esper skills is Berserk; this allows him to go into a frenzy of AI controlled moves that can be learned in various ways throughout the game. He wields his massive club (and can also use hammers, axes…etc.) and smashes anything that his superior tells him to. His jobs include Berserker, Savage, Monk (which gives him the Blitz command FF3), Geomancer, Gladiator, Guardian, Viking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lainis: Lainis is a clever, voluptuous bandit. A “four” armed bandit in fact seeing that Shiva gives her, her powers, which are a four-armed dagger mode along with some chilling combo moves. Her original move is the ever-popular “Steal” for she is a thief after all. Her first esper power is 4-Arm. She runs the BoB (Band of Bandits, the name was thought up by Iagan). Her job classes include Dancer, Pirate, Bard, Gunner, Fencer, Samurai, Enchantress. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ramse: Ramse, the child emperor of Alungbrita, a kingdom far out in the sand made almost of pure gold and one of the only cities in the entire world that runs on electricity, (a Midgar type of place where the slums are made of gold:). This electrical kingdom makes him the perfect candidate for Ramuh. He uses his knuckles, claws and staves once he has unlocked his power. His jobs include Emperor (where he can use the Tool command from FF3) Brawler (combos like Zell from FF8) Shaman, Wizard, Alchemist, and Bird Trainer. One esper skill is Jolt, in which lightning will randomly strike the arena hurting ‘anyone’ it touches (if you have a better idea for his skill tell me plz). Well he is not the most beloved king and is being plotted against, but all of that will come later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iris: Iris is the sweet, innocent, caring, nurturing harpy from hell. The spirit of Siren makes her gentle and gives her a sweet voice which can calm animals and such, but anger her and she goes bitch wild on your ass. Iris is in fact Lainis’ sister and longtime arch nemesis thief. She uses a variety of weapons including spears, harps, whips and bows but all depending on her job. Some jobs of hers are Archer, Dancer, Tamer, Chemist, Gypsy, Bard. She can also mix status potions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fai-li: Fai-li is a princess from the sky castle of fire. Her spirit is that of Phoenix and she is free willed and always exploring life, and an especially good fighter. She and her sister (princess of water) are special cases because they can already use magic and stuff before they get their spirit powers. They are greatly enhanced however afterwards. She has a Chung-Li type of look. She uses powers of fire and life and attacks with fans, katanas, darts, guns, shurikens Her jobs are Ninja (throw command) Sorceress, Priestess, Sharp-shooter, Shrine Maiden (I couldn’t think of a sixth job for her??? Help) (Lai-li and Fai-li will be the most fun part of the game because you get to unite their quarreling kingdoms and depending on how well you do you get certain items). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lai-li: The sister of Fai-li, Lai-li is imbued with Leviathan and resides in the sky castle of water. She is more subtle and a learned princess. She knows about the secret power of the Magi-tek and uses this knowledge. She attacks with whips, lances and machines of her own creation. She has a most memorable job, Dragoon (jump) Blue Mage, Mech-Mage, Naiad, Witch, Celestial Maiden. (Another fun note, their real names are excruciatingly long and take too much time for anyone to say in the English language so they were shortened. (someday I might take the time to make up their real names:) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bauhman: He is the guardian of Fai-li. A mysterious sort of guy (with a very Cloud sort of appearance) and always wears a black cloak and keeps his eyes wrapped with a bandage (he is blind). He uses powerful auras that surround his fists as his weapons and upgrades come in the form of magical enhancements (he has Demi powers). If Bauhman and Fai-li are in your party he will protect her most of the time and cast shield on her when she is low on HP. His job classes are Wanderer, Guardian, Slayer, Dark Knight, Star Mage, Demon. And in case you haven’t guessed he is Bahamut. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex: Here is a simple sort of guy. He is the protector of Lai-li and is Alexander. He’s the white knight in shining armor, but unfortunately he’s about as smooth as Steiner (FF9) and half as smart. He’s the only character who uses full-fledged swords and equips shields, armor and stuff. It’s the same principal with him and Lai-li. He will use spells of Holy and the like. (also, I’d like him to have the Limit Breaker Omni Slash :) Job classes are White Knight, Paladin, Soldier, Protector, Archangel, Cleanser. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sylph: Guess who this one is. Well Sylph is your only character of wind properties which makes her a valuable character. But she is one of three secret characters of extraordinary power (which means a whole crap load of extra stuff you gotta’ do to get her). She is a little pixie girl who rides on a broom and has purple hair. She has fewer jobs and abilities but she kicks ultimate ass with a magic power that surpasses the sky princesses. She still has a wide variety of abilities and many different very funky brooms and wands to equip. She would provide much comical relief if obtained. Her jobs are Nymph, Fairy and Dryad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kuja(it could happen): This name is definitely open to suggestions, I would like him to be from a previous final fantasy. He is the tri-elemental guy and is powered by Kjata/Tritoch from 3 and 7. He is a crazy double-faced gambler/crazy guy (AHA! Finally, a gambler) and uses the mimic command. He’s got a mask over one side of his face (red mask) and the other half is very tanned (yellow) and the rest of his dress is basically red and yellow. He wears a jesters hat and pointed shoes and such attire that a jester would ware. He has the widest variety of weapons and only there job classes (joker, gambler and the ??? class that allows him to equip a set of weapons/armor that will make him look like old FF characters). His main weapon is a bouncy ball but he can also use things like scythes, dice, tarot cards…etc. I think that this character would make the game kick about doubled the ass it would kick otherwise. Cut-scenes could be used to show the party’s reaction to his new look. (he always has a mask) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ix and Ijore: The twin “Brothers” (FF8) are Golem and Titan. Though at first glance you wouldn’t really guess that because they are both about 4 feet tall and somewhere around 9 years old. They are the little powerhouses of the game with the highest strength but other stats are low (when together). The party consists of 1-4 characters and these two only count as one, but they can be KO’d separately. When they are in battle together they each have an HP bar and MP bar (and they are attacked separately) but when you attack with them they both run up and bash on the opponent for extreme damage. When one dies their stats do a flip-flop, their strength goes down and other stats increase because the spirit of the dead brother powers up the other. They use fun weapons like bombs, tonfas, hatchets, helmets (for ramming attacks)… Equipping them is like equipping a single character and same with jobs, but not with healing items. :::: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game Play · Characters will equip weapons based on their job class · When buying weapons they will be color coated to show who can use them · The job center is probably the most important place in the game. Ramse will introduce you to jobs in Alungbrita. For most of the game you can only change jobs at job centers. At a job center you can change your job class. Once you’ve changed job classes all weapon stores will now have weapons/armor for that job in stock. Plus your appearance will change. · Characters can level up to Lvl 99 and can also level up job classes up to certain levels · Kuja’s super special costumes will cost 600,000 gil for each piece so they are hard to get (‘cause maximum money is 999,999) · Character’s strongest weapons will be comical and weak (such as a squeaky foam bat for Ifrit) and can be equipped with any job class. They will teach the character the two abilities, one is their final ability and the other makes their final weapon strong. · No one can learn all magic spells by themselves. Ex.: Ifrit can learn all fire spells, some earth spells and a few dark spells. For him to learn spells like holy and aero he must do special training at the job center with Sylph for wind spells and Alex for holy spells etc. When you start a training session you will select which character you want to learn spells from. You will then enter the Spell Cage (a virtual arena) where you must follow the instructions of the person you are learning spells from. For each task you complete you will get a certain amount of MXP (magic experience) and each spell has a predetermined amount of MXP needed. The tasks they require you to do vary on who they are. So each person will have different virtual arena and a unique set of tasks. · Cid? Should he be a secret character? A shopkeeper? Airship captain? Ultimate villain? Again give me your feedback. I want to know what you think. · Moogles will run the casino where Kuja hangs out. You can play fun mini games there as well as gamble, like betting on Chocobos (FF7:) · Biggs and Wedge will make their cameo appearance throughout the game as entrepreneurs trying to sell you things. Each time you meet them they will have great things to buy, but no means to make it. SO guess what to do?… SYNTHESIZE!!! Bring them stuff and they will make you good stuff. Each time you complete a certain part of the game they disappear and leave a note saying they’ve gone bankrupt and have moved to a new location where they will sell you newer better stuff. (like your final weapons) However, to get them going you have to donate a substantial amount of money to them at the beginning of the game. · Chocobos are ride able once you have stopped the bad guys trying to destroy them. You get one Chocobo, you can name it, race it and do other exciting things. After getting the Chocobo you go to the gambling place (I need a cool name for it like Moogle Mansion) and get Kuja to join you and he can enter the Chocobo in races and once he (the Chocobo) is a high enough racing Lvl, he can be summoned by Kuja into battle. · Limits are useable when your limit bar (as in FF7) is full. Each character has 5 limits that they learn over time and an Esper limit. · Once a character has visited the esper tomb they receive the power of their chosen esper. Now they will begin to learn their magic spells (with the exception of the princesses and their protectors) and have new abilities. You will have five commands, one is based on your esper’s level and one is based on your job class. Ex.: A thief job class will have steal and a ninja will have throw. In the sommoner job class you can customize which five commands you want. When you use your esper limit you transform into it and can use more powerful spells and attacks. Once the battle is over you transform back. If you master all of your jobs you can then select the Summoner job and transform permanently into the esper. · A character’s esper will go up levels also and take part in cut-scenes. They are just like characters except you don’t equip them. You must choose which spells they will learn next (only one at a time) and what Runes (similar to Relics FF3) they will have. The runes will give them certain power-ups. Each esper has its own personal shrine, and every ten levels (or so) your esper can visit the shrine and power up and their summon will change for the better and so will your character. · You can change your characters on the world map, in your ships and at job centers. Characters will not gain XP when not in your party. · This game will feature four ships. First is your land ship, which is a very large tank you receive from breaking out of an army facility. It can cross shallow rivers and rough terrain. Second is your ship. This will not actually be yours, but you can pilot it to any port town. The ship is a cruise liner, which you can visit regularly once you complete a part of the game. Lastly are your air ship, the Phoenix and your submarine, Leviathan (guess who gives you those). · Experience or XP is based on your performance in battle. For instance if you pull off a forty hit combo then you’ll probably go up a level, if you sit and do nothing then your partners will go up levels. The final blow delivered to an enemy will give extra XP. XP will be displayed in a bar in the top left corner of the screen. If you let your XP bar fill up orange than you can press down in the D-pad to stockpile your XP. Stockpiling is only available once you’ve filled up a new color of your bar. Stockpiled XP will not go towards the character stockpiling it. It can be used at job centers to level up characters not in your party or your esper, but it will only be worth half as much. · In every (or almost every) town you visit Lainis and Iagan will get the itch to pilfer someone or someplace. So you can embark on many side-quests to lout banks, people and stores. This aspect will be added in the first town you arrive at in which the game will give you a tutorial on how to rob a bank. You must select from Chibi, Lainis, Iagan or Iris. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses. The game play will change to a third person sneak game (Metal Gear Solid-ish). You will have HP and MP bars. To stop you, some guards will attack and some will just simply arrest you on the spot. Each type of guard will look unique so you know which guards to fight and which to run away from. But guards will chase you to the ends of the earth so it is good to plan ahead and get tips from other thieves on where to hid and so on. Each bank will be unique and have certain traps and obstacles you need to get around. Magic will assist you as well as items (like smoke bombs). The big treasure will be on the bottom floor of the bank/store but their will also be many smaller treasures to collect along the way. If you are caught you will be thrown in jail (but you easily find your way out) and will not be allowed back into the bank to try again, so do it on your first try. Some items collected on thieving missions will be added to the gallery. · The Gallery: In the town of Noumble (which is your high society town of the game) there will be many extras you can do (including much thievery). One such thing is the art gallery. Items you’ve collected along the way will be put on display in the gallery for you to view at any time. These are just for fun and will serve no purpose (except maybe a surprise ending). They will be somewhat reminiscent of past FF games like maybe some Materia or Clouds sword. Plus when you have Chibi’s painting job he can paint pictures of certain enemies and they will be added to the art gallery. · The Arena. (You know I wouldn’t forget that). Some ways into the game one of the many cults will form the Arena games in order to choose the mightiest warrior to be sacrificed to Ro-Ana-Nanaki. You figure that they are pretty much harmless, but the monsters inside are not so you get to go enter (don’t worry, you wont be sacrificed). In the higher up competitions you will fight one on one with old foes (that can be painted and added to the gallery). You gain no XP from the battles but much needed items. Battle System (on PS2) When walking on the world map or in a dungeon you will encounter random battles. Battles take place in enclosed arenas. Battle style is real time. The character at the head of your party will be the one you control during battle. The others will be your support. You will be able to roam around the arena freely and attack, as you will. A groovy advantage will be jumping. Once you attain the Jump Boots relic (or if you are a Dragoon Knight) in some arenas there will be multiple levels to the battle arena. When a battle starts it will show you a grid layout of the arena displaying the entire area, width, height, and depth. Some arenas, however, will be only one level but you can still jump. Fighting enemies will be like in Kingdom Hearts where you may run up to the enemy and attack, pulling off combos and whatnot. With long ranged weapons you cannot perform combos, but may hit enemies from a distance. You will have a battle gauge like in the other FF games and the amount of bar full affects the amount of attacks you can do. Ex.: Say your stamina is 40; well then you have a 40 for your battle gauge in battle. A regular attack costs 3, Firaga costs 10 and so on. When you have no stamina (battle gauge) left you must wait until it refills to a certain point to begin attacking again. The X button is used to attack. Circle is used to jump. Square is used to Defend. Triangle is for your esper ability. Holding down L2 will bring up your list of magic spells. R2 can be pressed or held down to perform your job ability. And press start to bring up your inventory of items. R1 is the lock on capability and L1 is used to Story The game starts in the small machinery operated town of Kruin. The notorious BoB (get it:) Lainis Sulftus and Iagan Burre are planning to steal a very valuable bank shipment and they are enlisting the help of Chibi Arious. Chibi is an orphan turned bandit after he ran away from home. They are in fact set up by their employer and are forced to flee town. They end up in the palace of Alungbrita where an old friend of Chibi’s, Ramse Carset, invites them into his home. The emperor Ramse is being plotted against (as I mentioned) and this plays a big part in the game, the plotters are one of the main bag guy organizations. These (the Allegiance of Ro-Ana-Nanaki or A.R.A.N.) guys are trying to terraform the world (destroying it in the process) by using ancient energy they gather from ancient creatures such as Chocobo, Tonneberry, and Moogles, and you must stop them from killing off these creatures (so you’re like an unlikely group of activists). After an attempted assassination on the emperor you flee Alugbrita too and along the way you end up hiding in a cave, which Chibi leads you to and it is there that you discovery the magic espers and their powers. So you take the powers from the espers and go on your way. Next you will meet up with Lainis’ long lost sister (and mortal enemy) Iris Sulftus. So she joins you (after a series of fun and wacky mishaps) and you continue The bad guys hire gangs to stop you stopping them. But these gangs are actually guinea pigs in ARAN’s big evil scheme. Once you have defeated the leader of a gang it will show cut scene/cinema of the gang leader being used to complete part of Ro-Ana-Nanaki. After he is complete he will destroy ARAN and begin questing for the ultimate source of all natural energy. This will lead into chapter two of the story. After RAN finds the ultimate source of all natural energy (The Crystal Shards:) he learns of his worshipers all over the world and of his past and his destiny and whatnot. He discovers his three brothers Rixnok, Sharmasch and Uminolith. In the beginning of time they were created by the Crystals to manage the world in a peaceful manner. But an outside evil tainted their minds and made them evil. They were soon banished to the Ether realm and the Crystals had to start again. This time they imbued the power of Terra/Earth in the spirits of the creatures (Chocobos, Moogls…etc.). So the four brothers are uniting and the cults that worship them are growing stronger and you then enlist the help of the two sky palaces. But unfortunately they are warring amongst themselves so you bring peace to the people and get the added forces of the princesses Lai-li and Fai-li and their royal guards. So once you defeat the 4 brothers and disperse of all the cults then the one who tainted them is all pissed. This is Chapter three. The ultimate evil is the demon Ragnarok (does everyone think that that is a good idea?). He sends seven demons of hell (or someplace similar) to stop you while he spreads darkness over the world. The demons are Behemoth, Byblos, Adamanchyte, Iron Giants, Malboro, Tiamat, and Chimera. (By the way this game will feature an all-new string of enemies plus a large roster of classics). So that’s your basic story in a nutshell. Sylph, Kuja and the Brothers each have their own very detailed, very awesome side quests. Chibi also plays a very important role in this game. Ever since he can remember he has been an orphan. He has no recollection of his mother or father or past. Always ending up in a new house with new parents, he never learned anything about himself. One day he ends up in the care of an old man in the mountains and runs away to Kerval. Well his story advances once you reach esper cave. Once you’ve escaped from Alungbrita in Ramse’s limo, it breaks down a few miles from the next town. So they spend the night in a cave. After a heard of Buffalux stampede by there is a cave in and Lainis is almost crushed by rocks but fortunately his Ruby horn reacts just in time and casts a barrier over her and saves her. After that he begins hearing voices in the cave (and every esper cave afterwards), which show him images of his forgotten past such as when he was in a mysterious room and a demon was hovering over him with a black dagger. (These images will haunt him throughout the game) So then he leads the gang to the esper shrine where they all obtain their powers. Well it turns out that Chibi is actually the guardian, created by the crystals in order to protect the world. So it is required to have him in your party for the battle with Ro-Ana-Nanaki (but only for that battle). Chapter one is mostly about developing Chibi’s past. You’ll also get clued in on the rest of the characters pasts and destinies but they get more in depth later on. Well there you have it. I guess if I could sum it up in one word it’d be Nostalgic. And if I could sum it up in two words they’d be Nostalgic and Huge. I want this game to be huge, massive, gigantic and every other synonym of ‘Big.’ Fully explorable and customizable is what makes a good FF I think. Now give me all your feedback and help me make this game better than it is. And also, if I contradict myself ever, let me know ‘cause I’m sure I did somewhere, thnx :) (no animals were harmed in the typing of this video game idea)
