Learn Game Programming
DeVry's Game and Simulation Programming curriculum will prepare you for taking on various development roles in the game industry.
Game Art & Design Degree
Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
Main idea:
Did you ever watch Star trek and thought: “That’s what I’m going to be when I grow up! I’m going to be a captain!!!” And when you told your parents you were going to be the new captain of the Enterprise, they told you it was just a story?
Well, let me tell you, it is NOT just a story! Ask your friends to come online and take a test to see if they’re suitable for a captain, an engineer or any other occupation on your own spaceship!
The game comes with a headphone so you can talk to each other as if you’re all together in that spaceship. You can have 5 characters per "game"(=CD-box) And because the game comes with 5 CD's (one per proffession and one installation disk) you can only have one profession at a time. (Duh!)
When you log on for the first time you'll have to look around the starting planet for crews that need someone of your proffession. When you're a captain, you should look for other crewmembers to make a full crew, and to collect money to build a spaceship. A captain can make a list of those who can go in and out of his spaceship. This way you can have multiple engineers, or more captains (tacticals). But to realise that you'll need more room, and to get more room you need (you understand) more money.
If one crewmember NEVER comes online, and if the rest of the crew agrees, that crewmember can be kicked out (deleted from the list of people that can enter the spaceship). If you're entire crew never comes online, you can quit your job at that crew any time. Then you should search for an other crew who needs some more people.
Careers and what you do with it
Here is a list of careers and what you can do with it.
Captain: You can see what the ship can do and you make the discisions. To fight or not to fight. That is one of many questions.
Pilot: Steers around the universe, makes the shields turn on, aims and shoots with the weapons and looks if the shields are charged up enough.
Status-teller (who has a better name?): Has more info about the ship (how much it is damaged etc.), tells the captain what you can expect of this part of space, looks around for hostile/friendly spaceships and planets/Space Stations you can land on.
Engineer: Builds/researches new devices/weapons, keeps the engine turning and clean and fully repaired.
Flying for the first time
What the captain sees:
The captain sees the cockpit with the pilot to the left, the status-teller to the right, and himself in the middle. He sees them all from the back so he can also look on the big screen that shows the suroundings and sometimes captains from other spaceships.
What the pilot sees:
The pilot sees the spaceship (and its expansions) in 3rd person view so he can see it go up and down, back and forwards and turn let and right. On the bottom of the screen he can see the status of the shields and the weapons. A hostile spaceship will be recognized by a red triangle above it, and a friendly one by a green triangle.
What the status-teller sees:
The status-teller can see the whole ship and the status of it by clicking on one of his sections. He can also keep a journal about what he's seen on the voyages. He can also look at the radar and see what is around the spaceship (other spaceships, planets etc.)
What the engineer sees:
The engineer has two rooms. The invent/research room and the engine room. In the engine room the engineer can fix the engine when it's (nearly) broken or add expansions to the engine. In the invent/research room things can be researched or invented. There will be made a schetch of it which you can bring to one of the factories, and there your invention will be made real. Researching is thinking how you can let the engine turn on less fuel etc. (If anyone knows how the engineer should play this part, tell me)
When you and your fellow crewmembers go on board for the first time, there will be a training course. This way the pilot will see how to fly and how to use weapons, the captain will see how his crew reacts to his orders and if he should change his behaviour the engineer will see how to care after the engine and how to invent stuff etc. When you’ve finished the training successful, you and your fellow crewmembers will be teleported through a black hole to the starters point. From there you can start your career as an official spaceship crewmember!
From then you can do (and complete) missions to get more money. When you've completed a mission you get rank points, and when you've got a certain amount of rank points, you go up in rank so you can do missions that will get you more money. The lowest rank on the spaceship counts. Buy new weapons and spaceship upgrades (Or a completely new spaceship!) by landing on planets and going to markets (landing is explained below).
When you've got more money, you can even buy your own Space Station and start your own group of spaceships that work together. Or you can create a bigger engine, but you'll have to hire another engineer too. Then you should ask around if any engineer would like to work with you.
Battle in Space
When you encounter hostile spaceships the pilot should change from 3rd person to 1st person view to get a better aim. Turn your shields on, choose the weapon you want to use (you can program the 1-9 buttons on your keyboard so that you will choose a certain weapon). Then on the bottom of the screen you will see how much the weapon/shield is loaded. Less energy will also say a less hard shot with a weapon. Spaceships have shields and HP (hit points). The shields recharge with energy and the HP of the spaceship must be fixed by an engineer or in a garage.
Landing on planets
Landing on planets will also be available. When you land you get a top 3rd person view of you, your crew and the landscape. You can walk around with the keypad and when you click on something with your mouse you can get all sorts of info about the clicked thingy. When you walk around you can also buy/sell stuff and talk to other people. The other players can hear you talk when you're close to them, or when they've clicked your name. (Then all they hear is you talking)You can also get missions this way. You can even receive missions from other players. (To distract an enemy for example) Then there will be made a contract which must be (electronically) signed by both crews.
You can also buy buildings on planets that you can use to make your own "clan building". You could even play this game without flying around, and only make a living by being a clan leader and getting lots of missions which you put through to others (but with offering less money.) so you can make a living with that.
Tell me if you have any things that this game might need, or if you want to develop this game. I'd LOVE to be in the credits of this game :D
