Learn Game Programming
DeVry's Game and Simulation Programming curriculum will prepare you for taking on various development roles in the game industry.
Game Art & Design Degree
Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
Here, I will list the things which game developers really need to take a look at before finalizing the game. Some of these things really annoy people.
- Opening Cinematics - this HAS to be skippable. It is very annoying to watch the same intro movie every time you load the game. Also, "space" or "enter" has to skip the current cinematic (if there are several, like some company logos and then the game intro), and "escape" has to skip all the cinematics.
- Menu Interface - make it interesting. This is not necessary, but please don't keep it static. Look at "Operation Flashpoint". They have the game playing in the background while you select menu stuff. Also, when new menus load, don't make it too fancy, maximum loading time (animation) is 1 second.
- Options - tooltips are a must. Not every gamer knows what each thing means in the options menu. This is especially necessary for the controls menu, where many newbies don't know what some of the controls do. So, when the mouse is held for a few seconds above the control name, a tooltip should appear saying what it does.
- Training - must be included. Simple as that. Also, when your trainee/instructor/etc says "Press [button] to move forward", etc, then [button] should be a variable, not the default control. If I assign "move forward" to "w", then it should say "Press W to move forward".
- Manual - must be included as well, with some descriptions of units/weapons/characters/storyline/etc.
- Quick Reference Card - is not a must but is very welcome.
- Installation - Ability to skip certain files if they are missing. If a CD is scratched, and some of the files are missing, it should be possible to (1) skip the files or (2) download it from a support database on the game website.

I will also put my foot down and agree that most of the listings above are MUST HAVE items. A message to all game developers: Do not disregard the above listings, on acount that they are needed desperately in many games. I don't know if certain companies choose not to add these because it saves time, whatever the reason; many more games would be more enjoyable if they took the time to take these additions into consideration. I'm glad someone finally spoke up and said something! I'm sure it's been on alot of our minds.

Is this a game idea? :P Yeah, i guess i agree with everything, or almost everything. I would truly love to skip all of the beginning developer junk, but that may be needed, just like credits are needed at the end of games and movies. Ya gotta give credit to whom credit is due. But usually you can skip through all of that pretty quickly anyway. Anyway, thanks for speaking up.

Some things to include

These are some pretty good ideas. Here's a few more, in case you want to include them.
Here are a few things that you should never judge a game by.
1. Graphics: Don't pick up a game, look at the graphics, and think "man, the graphics aren't too good. I'll skip this one. Graphics don't have much to do with gameplay, and judging a game by them is not a good idea.
2. 2D: Many people think that Xbox, Gamecube, and PS2 have long outgrown 2D graphics. They're not as exciting, but come on, many great games have come from 2D graphics. Think along the lines of Street Fighter and Mega Man.
3. Violence: Someone once told me that if you can't kill anyone in a game, it aint fun. Give me a break. Blood is fun. Bloody games are fun. But haven't we all enjoyed a few E rated ones once in a while? I don't think it's good judgment to skip a game because spraying guts isn't involved.
Movie Based Video Games
Sorry movie makers, but if you're going to make your movie into a game, do it right. This is about the only thing I can look at and automatically skip. Movie based video games usually = SUCK. But, there are a few ecxeptions, like Spiderman, that was cool.
Well, that's all for now. Hope you'll consider!
