To me, Auron and Link have to be the most innovative video game characters of all time. One comes from the kingdom of Hyrule, having grown up in the small Kikiri Forest, chosen to be the Hero of Time. The other is a legendary guardian, gifted with endless wisdom and incredible strength, willing to risk his life to save another. Both come from a successful history of video gaming as well, one coming from the evolutianry Legend of Zelda series and one coming from the praised Final Fantasy series. This is not like Kingdom Hearts, where you find yourself surrounded with silly characters; this is where the greatest characters of video gaming unite for the ultimate battle of good and evil.
Hyrule awakens to a sky turning bitter black, the land turning dark. Animals seem to be going mad, jumping out of control, plants withering and dying. From the shadows creep black horses with grisly riders, heading toward Kikiri Forest. They begin to tear the village apart, rudely awakening Link, whom they have been sent to kill. Link runs outside to protect the village from these riders on a killing frenzy, yet is no match against all of them. He finds himself running, followed by the shadowy beasts. His attempts to fire arrows at them fail.
After running he finds himself cornored, sweaty, a pointless attempt to defend himself by drawing his sword. One of the shadow riders lifts his sword, ready to strike, when from the wall behind Link two hands appear, dragging him into the rocks as if he was a ghost. The rider strikes nothing but the rock.
Link awakens in a bed, Auron standing next to him. Auron tells him that he had taken him into the past and begins to explain him what happened. He tells him that the shadow riders were soldiers for Ganondorf, who was reawakened by someone by the name of Sephiroth. The shadow riders were supposed to kill him, and if Auron hadn't acted, they would have succeeded. Once Link was killed, the entire world and the future where Auron had come from turned into darkness, death and war every day. There was no way to escape this world of misery, since the only one who could save it was the hero of time, Link, who had been killed. Link was to help Auron defeat Sephiroth and Ganondorf before they could create the dark triforce, which gave them their ultimate power.
From that moment on Auron and Link go on their adventure through Hyrule, their quest to find Sephiroth and Ganondorf and defeat them before they could create the dark triforce. Along their journey they find others who also travelled back in time to stop the evil who join our adventurers. Some of those characters would be Zidane, Cloud and Squall.
The battle engine would be somewhat a mix of the ones that you see in Final Fantasy in Legend of Zelda; it would not be turn based, like Zelda, where you are in real time, attacking the opponent. You still, however, level up and gain experience points to grow stronger and make attacks more effective, somewhat like Baldur's Gate. You can also choose the character you are in control of; you can also summon a menu which lets you tell the character(s) you're currently not playing what to do (defend, attack, follow, don't follow, etc.).
I dearly hope that someday a game like this will appear on the market; Auron and Link are legendary characters who together, are simply unstoppable. I truly think that this game could become a huge success.
