Ultimate Foosball

Platform: Xbox and Playstation 2

Gameplay:

Ultimate Foosball will be an intense multiplayer video game based on one of the greatest games ever invented, foosball. The game will be played exactly like foosball; official rules will be incorporated and it will feature a variety of different tables. When a player begins the game, he will start on a very basic table, possibly an old model, and as they progress, the tables will get nicer and more professional.  Real tables will be used, with the consent of the companies that manufacture them, and real players from a number of different leagues will be represented by the figures. Custom players can be created and the name will be displayed on the back of the figure. The view of the table will be a top view just like the player was actually playing on the table and a front view will be used for penalty kicks. The camera will be customizable to different angles according to the preference of the player. The players will be controlled using the analog joysticks. The player on the bottom of the table (referring to the screen) controlling the goalie and defenders will use the left analog stick to control the goalie and, depending on the table, the 2 defenders on either side of him. The right analog stick will control the next line of defenders. The left trigger will cause the goalie and defenders on that stick to kick and the right trigger will cause the next 2 defenders to kick. The same control scheme will apply to the remaining handles. The left analog will control the midfielders and the right will control the forwards. There will be some forward and backward movement control using the analog stick to allow players to maneuver the ball. Since the view of the table is a top view, the player(s) on top of the table will not have to same controls. The goalie will be controlled with the right analog (since it is on the far right side of the table) and the next line of defenders with the left. The triggers and dribbling control will remain the same. Up to 4 players can compete simultaneously and 2 players can compete against 2 others in an online match. Both Xbox and Playstation 2 support online play and Xbox’s new XSN sports feature allows for season gameplay as well as tournaments.

Visual Elements:

The visual aspects of the game will give the player a sense that they are playing on a real foosball table, but at the same time, give off that genuine arcade effect. The ball will have a motion trail on very hard shots and some visual effects will be present when a goal is scored.  3D hands will be seen on the foosball handles and they will be animated in accordance with the control of the game. Facial expressions will be seen on the figures when a goal is scored (maybe a big grin or a cocky glare). A zoom out of the camera will reveal celebrations of the 3 dimensional players actually playing the game. Some customization of these in game players would be optional.

Game Modes:

Quest – The question mode, or single player campaign, will start out on a small, primitive table in the bedroom of the player. The first challenge will be against the player’s older sibling. Once the player beats the first opponent, they will move on to the next challenge. Possible venues and opponents include some hot shot at the local arcade, a tournament at a nearby foosball venue, a personal challenge from a professional foosball player at the venue of his/her choice, a national tournament sponsored by a foosball league, and finally, a worldwide tournament featuring the best foosball players. The Quest mode can be played with 1 or 2 players.

Multiplayer – The multiplayer mode will allow up to 4 players to play against each other on any of the tables that have been unlocked in the quest mode. The game will be customizable for such options as time of day (night time games will feature dark rooms with lamps spotlighting the table), team, jersey color, type of ball being used, and several other options. The multiplayer games will be exhibition and have no effect on the quest mode.

Online – The online mode will be very similar to the multiplayer mode but it will feature up to 2 players on an Xbox battling it out online. Stats and rankings will be kept and full voice capability will be implemented.

Drills – This mode of the game will allow players to sharpen their skills and gain some extras to spice up the games. The drills mode will include penalty kicks, a 1 pass goal, a 2 pass goal, dribbling drills, goalie drills (a number of stops in a row), and many others. Prizes for accomplishing these drills will be as follows: stat points for created characters, unlock hidden characters, new jerseys, new balls, official foosball gloves that the animated hands will wear, and many more.

Practice – The practice mode of the game will allow the players to test out the controls and familiarize themselves with the gameplay. No score will be kept and no penalty kicks will be given. There will be no clock and the game will not end unless the player exits out of the game mode.

More on animated players...

As mentioned in the Visual Elements section, the animated foosball players will have celebrations when winning, and cocky glares and smiles. I think this game could offer much more if you focus more on the animated gameplay. In addtion, why not enable the player to BECOME the foosball player (the little man on the metal bar). I think this concept would be not only comical but outstanding! can you imagine having no arms and both you legs stuck together?! Well, even if you choose to disregard this comment, I am surprised that you haven't included an optional first person perspective rather than an overhead view. Seeing through the players' eyes may be a bit more interesting. All in all, this is an acceptably good idea, B-
