Back Story:
Your kingdom is collapsing under the weight of the seventy year war with the Muracai armies in the east. The numbers who have died are countless. The Emperor, a young man when the war began, is now ancient and senile. The Council of Lords is plagued by corruption and controlled by the wealthy Guild of Shippers and Holders. There is a greater danger, though, that looms silently in the kingdom. On three consecutive nights, in three identical ways, three innocent young girls have been slaughtered in the city of Rissock - the capital of the kingdom. Their bodies show no sign of trauma, except that their hearts have been removed with almost surgical precision. So few realise, but the ancient Blood Prophecy is taking shape. Of those that do realise, so few desire to fight against it.
Where do you fit in?
To begin with, you (the gamer) take on the role of Aredei, a young apprentice blacksmith. You undertake a few tasks to familiarise you with the game. However, you quickly come to witness the murder of the fourth innocent girl. You are in great danger of being killed, except that you are saved by a tall warrior character. The character who saves you is Loki, a member of the "insidious" Dragonkind Guild. He takes you back to their secret guild headquarters. There you are told a great many things about the evil that lurks in Rissock. You deny them, until you discover that you have been blamed for the murder of the innocent girl and the three other girls and there is a warrant for your arrest. With no where safe to turn, you take up with the Dragonkind Guild and so begins your journey to save the Kingdom and the world.
How it works?
The objective is, obviously, to discover the force behind the prophecy and eliminate it. This is done through many missions of varying kinds and difficulties. You may have to sneak into a fort and steal a scroll for one mission; chase down a scout carrying the alarm on horseback in another mission. You will have to take part in a melee style siege of a city in one mission; and then, battle pirates aboard a ship at sea in another. In this regard it is much like any other swords and magic FPS game. However, the interesting thing is - you are able, at any time in the game, change from one character to any other of the three main characters (Loki, Aredei and two others from the Dragonkind Guild). Moreover, as the game progresses, these characters reveal their magic ability to communicate with dragons and from that point on, you are also able to switch to the perspective of their personal Dragon Guardians. In most missions, it will not be possible to achieve the goal without switching to the Dragon's perspective and, for example, burning down the guard tower where all the archers are hiding and thus allowing your human character to cross the courtyard. ALSO, in many cases there will be three or four missions running at the same time so that you may have to achieve something in one mission with one character so that another character in another mission can achieve their goal. For example, a city mission may require a character in the sewer to enter a palace through a vertical shaft that is too high for them to jump or scale. Another character in the city would have to break the sewer gate at the river and flood the sewer so that the first character could float up the shaft to their goal.
Interesting Features
Apart from the interconnected missions and ability to swap characters (each of which would have different styles, abilities, demeanors), you will have to think carefully about when and where to swap. If you swap to another character while your character is in the middle of a sword fight - your first character will be killed. To swap to another character, you will first have to find a safe place to hide. This means that level architecture is VERY important. Missions are not all the same thing. You could swap from one character who is stealthily sneaking through the servants passages of the palace in an effort to be undetected, to another character who is on the battlements firing flaming arrows onto a sieging horde. You could then swap to a dragon that is soaring above that same horde and sweep down to burn hundreds of the enemy to death, AND then you could swap to another character who is hunting down a terrified informant amidst the chaos of a city at war.
I think you all get the idea. I have quite a developed plot for this game idea, but I won't share that, or this will become far too long.

hmm..not many rpgs start you out framed for murder and thrust into an infamous guild. you story line definetly holds merit for original approach..the play mechanics seem nice as well in that you can switch between characters to complete different tasks..this mix should keep things interesting for the player..

Term technically ended 2 and a half hours ago, so here I am, back with 10 weeks worth of frustration to vent in tearing up people's ideas. The setting is good, but not really original. What is so insidious about the guild? Why is the guild interested in Aredei? (and if it's some 'ancient prophecy', I'll puke. Perhaps a prophecy from last Tuesday right after afternoon tea.) Beyond all that, which is not that important after all, the game has some good ideas. Do the different dragons have different abilities or are dragons simply dragons? What about the different characters? I presume there is the slow but strong one with a 2-handed weapon, the highly agile one with a rapier or similar, a stealthy one with daggers and an 'all-rounder' (ie the dull one). Presume also each has own skill eg agile one can jump off walls to reach higher points, stealthy one can sneak around etc. That the idea or doesn't it matter who you have where? How does combat work 1st person? Melee mainly? If so, how will you prevent the combat being as dull as 'Morrowind''s (great game, but poor combat- push attack, release, repeat). You mention the characters have different demeanors- how will that effect gameplay? What will the characters do whilst uncontrolled- stand around like lemons while they are skewered? Beyond all that, the importance of teamwork in each mission is well emphasised- you have correctly recognised that which makes your idea unique and emphasised it, exactly like you should. Good work.

I like your idea, needs more detail and description but it sounds cool already. I have a few things to ask/say though: first of all, your use of interconnected missions is great, this could work out very well if done correctly, kinda like prince of persia meets resident evil (since both games do this to a limited extent). second, i would like to know why the main character Aradei (nice to see a non-generic name for once) can also communicate with dragons like the other members of the guild, dont' tell me it's coincidence and has dragon blood or some other corny excuse like they use in some games. third, you've described the plot but not the characters or enemies etc. i think you need to do that. i don't often like an idea that lacks details, but i think this one has some potential for some reason, so expand on it if you can. my old "friend" newman above raises some good points and i agree on a number of them but, overall, good work

Thanks for the response... much appreciated.
In answer to a few questions, let me clarify. Aredei can't communicate with dragons, but the members of the guild can.
The guild itself is not truly insidious, just opposed to those in power who declare them "insidious". In actuality, they are the good guys. And they help Aredei purely because his life was in danger.
I will develop this idea further and post a more informative description at some future date, detailing the simple flow of the plot, and character descriptions for goodies and baddies.
I think some one raised a question about doing this in FPS. Actually, it would not be a true FPS game (like doom for example), but rather a FPS and 3rd person hybrid. Or perhaps simply a 3rd person game. As far as sword fighting goes, that never looks good in first person. Archery on the other hand is more effective in first person... however I have an idea of a targetting system that would make third person archery quick and intuitive.
I think the thing that should set this idea apart is the way in which multiple interconnected missions can be undertaken "simultaneously". That is, where as in other games missions are interconnected as far as the plot is concerned but are actually sequential with regard to game play - in this game the player chooses where and when to change to another player and another mission. I think that this would be great for enhancing playablity simply because, when you reach one of those frustrating problems that you just can't seem to solve - you can put it to one side, swap to another player and feel like you're still getting somewhere in another mission.
Thanks again.

You addressed our concerns quite well. But i have to ask you what you plan to do about the first person melee combat. Surely you can't have a game based solely around firing arrows? I hope you add more to this idea, unlike me (always "planning" to add more details to my ideas).

1st Person Melee

Well... I've been thinking about it more. And I have done away with the idea of 1st person as the primary view. The game will be played in 3rd person (with a following cam, like Jedi Knight when u're using the lightsabre). As I said, I have an idea for targetting that will make firing a bow accurately a breeze in 3rd person. It's a similar concept to the targeting system in Freelancer (if u are familiar with that). Melee will involve several weapons. Firstly there will be a variety of bows with different characteristics. Horse bows will do little damage over short distances, but will refire very quickly. Long bows will fire the furthest but take considerable time to refire (due to the strength needed to draw them). You will also have crossbows of varying power/refire rates for close up bow combat. There will also be a variety of swords. Long swords, short swords, sabres, cutlasses. Plus knives. You will also be able to throw stones that you pick up off the ground, and you will have those things that look like two balls attached by a string and when u throw them they wrap around the targets legs and trip them. This would do no damage, but it would stop your target from fleeing and allow you to finish them off with the sword if they didn't get up in time. I think that such a variety of weapons would make for quite interesting melee and online gaming.

Bola. The weapon that trips the opponent up is a bola. Ancient hunting weapon, although in reality it could smash kneecaps, permanently crippling the prey rather than merely tying them up. Easy!
